  • REGULATIONS of the young pіanіsts–іmprovіsers competition named by Dimitri Tiomkin

    The young pіanіsts–іmprovіsers competition named by Dimitri Tiomkin is held as a part of the International jazz festival «ENERGY» named by Dimitri Tiomkіn. It is the Kremenchug munіcipal project.

    Competition is organised under the aegis of School of jazz and variety art (Kiev) and personally its director Peter Poltarev.

    Dates of competition: April 17-19 2013

    Venue: Small Hall of the City Palace of Culture, Kremenchug, Poltava region, Ukraine

    Place of registration: 2nd floor foyer of the City Palace of Culture, Kremenchug, Poltava region, Ukraine

    Goals and tasks of the competition:

    - Popularization of music of a talented film composer, pianist, born in Kremenchug, Dimitri Tiomkin;

    - Detection and support of talented young pianists-performers;

    - Promotion of improvised and jazz music.

    Founders and organizers:

    - Department of Culture of the Kremenchug’ town council;

    - Public organization "Agency of Kremenchug Territories Development";

    - Ihor Leshchenko and Natalia Leshchenko.

    Honorary President of the competition - Olivia Tiomkin Douglas (United Kingdom, London)


    Jury Chairman - Vladimir Solyanik - pianist-improviser, a professor of R.Glier Kiev Institute of Music, Honored Artist of Ukraine, laureate of many international jazz festivals, emeritus art-director of the annual International Festival Jazz-Koktebel, a member of the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ), one of the teachers of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops at the University of Louisville (USA), a jury member of the International festival-competition of guitar art "Guitar world" (2011).

    Members of the jury:

    1. Andrey Kondakov (Russia, Saint-Petersburg) - composer and pianist, teacher ( jazz piano, improvisation and ensemble) at St. Petersburg musical College named by M.P. Musorgsky, music Director of the International jazz festival in the Peter and Paul fortress, the Director of the jazz festival in Petrozavodsk; was a member of the jury of Koblents jazz competition (Germany, 2000), young Performers competition (St Petersburg, 2007), Terem Crossover Competition «Come to the sound" (St. Petersburg, 2010, 2012 ).

    2. Peter V. Poltarev - musicologist, jazz critic, director of the only school of jazz and variety art in Ukraine (Kiev), chairman of the council of experts in jazz music at the Ministry of Culture.

    3. Vladimir P. Smolyakov - composer, honored worker of culture, the director of the Kremenchug musical school № 3 named by M.M. Kalachevsky, artistic director and conductor of the Song and Dance Ensemble «Slavutych», chief conductor of the Kremenchug Municipal Brass Band.

    4. Olga Y. Gorbach - pianist-improviser, senior lecturer in piano of the highest category, head of the piano department of School of Art № 5 (Kiev), director and producer of the popular Ukrainian jazz-band «JT-Fresh».

    1. Conditions and procedure of the competition

    Pianists, who have reached the age of 16 by the day of the I round and are not older than 30, can take part in the competition of the young pianists-improvisers.

    Winners of the first and the second prizes of the previous year are not allowed to participate in the Contest.

    Contestants are allowed to perform with the rhythm section.

    Competition consists of three rounds.

    Qualifying round of the competition– absentee round, candidates send their video and audio.

    Recording in the audio- or DVD format shall be sent to the email address of the Organizing Committee followed by the Request for participation in the Contest and the necessary documents. The recording may be amateur but of good quality and without editing.

    After the audition the Organizing Committee will send an official invitation for acceptance of candidates to the contest participants.

    I and II rounds of the competition - a public performance in the concert hall of Kremenchug

    The order of performance is established by casting of lots on the day of the round I and is kept till the end of the contest. After the registration of participants and casting of lots any changes in the cконкурсной programme of participants are allowed in exceptional cases with the consent of the jury.

    After the announcement of the results of round I music materials of the contest task for the II round (theme for improvisation) will be distributed to all the participants who passed to round II.

    The final distribution of places and prizes among the participants of round II will be decided at the final session of the jury.

    2. Prizes and awards

    All the participants of the contest who have passed the Qualifying round and took part in round I of the Competition will be awarded with Diplomas of the Competition participants. The contestants who have passed to round II get the relevant Diplomas and the winners of round II become winners of the Contest and are awarded with Diplomas of laureates and receive money prizes.

    The Organizing Committee of Dimitri Tiomkin Competition young pianists-improvisers announces the Prize Fund of UAH 24 000, including such awards for the winners of the Competition:

    I Prize - not less than UAH 8000

    II Prize - not less than UAH 6000

    III Prize - not less than UAH 4000

    All the prizes are paid in UAH with the tax withholding in applicable in Ukraine.

    The jury's decision is final and is not a subject to revision.

    The jury has the right to:

    - break off the performer in case of exceeding a certain time limit conditions of competition;

    - premiate additionally one more II prize , one more III prize and/or encouragement prize;

    - share the prizes between the performers (except the first)

    - award not all prizes;

    - award a special prize for a impressive performance of Dimitri Tiomkin composition;

    Jurors do not have the right to have their students among the participants and they make a signed statement about this before the competition.

    The Organizing Committee reserves the right according to the results of the audition to inform the participant about the fact that he/she is eliminated from further participation in the competition.

    Government and public organizations, creative unions, media, other institutions are able to establish special prizes and awards by agreement with the Organizing Committee.

    3. Financial conditions

    A required condition for participation in the competition is an entry fee, which is UAH 100 from each participant. Fee is paid on the account of the public organization "Agency of Kremenchug Territories Development" after receiving the invitation to participate in the contest.

    Participants arrive for the competition according to the terms specified in the invitation by the Organizing Committee.

    Trip of the participant to Kremenchug and back, as well as trip and stay at the competition of the accompanying persons is provided at his own expense.

    The Organizing Committee provides participants with stay at the competition:

    - habitation in a hotel or hostel;

    - two meals a day.

    These costs are provided only for the period of participation in the competition since the arrival in Kremenchug, but not before the deadline, and no more than a day after the end of the round, which was attended by the candidate.

    The participants, who arrived for the competition and refused to perform, as well as members who have not passed the second round, can stay until the end of the competition at their own expense.

    The Organizing Committee, in the case of advance address to it, may help persons who accompany the participants in the reservations and tickets to attend the competition.

    4. Special Conditions

    The organizing Committee provides the participants of the contest one rehearsal before the first tour on the stage, where the contest is held, and rehearsal classes every day during the competition. The compuksary condition for the winners of the Competition (I, II and III prize) is a free participation in the gala-concert of the International jazz festival named by Dimitri Tiomkin.

    The Organizing Committee reserves all rights to broadcast auditions of the first and second rounds, audio-and video-recordings of their performance, as well as the use of recorded material without the permission of participants.

    5. Application procedure

    Audio and video recordings, as well as documents for the participation in the competition, must be sent before April, 3, 2013 to the e-mail address:

    List of documents as follows:

    1) the application for participation in the contest for the full program of the rounds (application form);

    2) a copy of the passport;

    3) a copy of the music education (optional)code

    4) photo in jpeg, pdf, gif format

    The application form signed by the applicant for participation in the competition, is the evidence that the future participant of the contest fully accepts the conditions of the competition.

    After receiving the application for participation in the competition, records and documents listed,

    the Organizing Committee makes decision about applicant’s further participation in the Competition jointly with the jury. Invitation for participation in the round I of the Competition or decision about stopping participation of the applicant in the Competition is sent to the electronic address, specified in the application.

    The Organizing Committee also sends information about a competitive task for participation in the round I of the competition and the invoice for payment of the entry fee.

    First and last names of the participant shoukd be specified in the receipt of the entry fee payment.

    In case of non-participation in the competition, documents, video, audio and entry fee are not refundable.

    Round II

    1. Competition theme (is issued to the performer after the results of round I of the competition).

    2. Tapeur competition (accompaniment of the film fragment)

    or Competition task, given by Organizing Committee

    or Improvisation for one of the Dimitri Tiomkin compositions chosen by the participant himself, or other improvised composition chosen by the performer.

    15.00 – Grand opening ceremony of the competition. Carrying out of the I round.

    17.00 - Continuation of the II round.

    19.00 - Meeting of the jury. Announcement of the results of the II round.

    18.30 - performance of the contest winners (first, second and third prize) at the gala concert of the International Jazz Festival named by Dimitri Tiomkin.

    22.00 - performance of the contest winners on the jam session of the International Jazz Festival named by Dimitri Tiomkin with all the participants of the gala concert
